What does the teacher want? Money! YES! :)
As the year winds down, we start to think of more and more hands-on activities! Here is a fun little independent game {or partner game} to practice counting coins AND to take an assessment on. We were practicing only counting nickels and pennies, but you can use any combination. You just need a bag of school money, a cup {that's optional}, and the recording sheet.
The students can scoop and total with a little cup or pinch and total by pinching the coins in the bag.

I like that this is super simple to set up! Thank you!
Hey Rachelle! I saw your Daily 5 comment on facebook. I'm replying on here because my facebook isn't set up to comment (I hope you and Natalie don't mind!).
This was my first year of the Daily 5 (actually Daily 3 in our room) and I think the biggest thing for me was using the "Work on Writing" time for Reader's Response. I know the typical Work on Writing is generally used for writing pieces from Writer's Workshop, but I kept my Writer's Workshop totally separate and used this time for the response journals. It worked great because it fit in nicely with the other rotations and created accountability for the Read to Self portion (students knew they would have to write a response each day). Now that we're towards the end of our school year, I am happy to see how much my students' Reader's Responses have improved. Plus (since they are newcomer ELL students) this daily response writing has helped their writing skills in general increase impressively!
Good luck with setting up your Daily 5 next year...my students loved having a choice and running their rounds each day. :)

Thanks Kristen! I am definitely looking into setting it up in my classroom next year. Thanks for the info!
Thanks Kristen!!!!! That helps so much!
@Natalie- You can borrow my book after I read it! :) Love ya!
Hope you don't mind if I answer here.
I have used the Daily 5 and CAFE for the last two years (3rd and 1st) and I LOVE it!!!! I highly recommend using both. It is still a work in progress, I don't do everything exactly like the sisters to be able to make it work for my situation. I am happy to answer any questions you guys have. You will find the books very easy to read with clear implementation directions unlike some other profession books. Daily 5 is my students favorite time of day!!

Thanks for the activity! I am looking for Review activities for the last two weeks of school that I can put in my lessons. Thanks!
Love the math activity. Thanks for sharing!
I love using Daily 5-- well 4-- in my 1st grade classroom. This is my first year to try it. I have slowly made changes throughout the year. I now have "Read to Self" all at one time so my kids aren't as distracted with others working on different choices. I also teach a chunk of reading, let my kids do 2 choices, another chunk of reading then the other choices. The Sister's had a little too much transition for me. I use a 100's pocket chart to organize the children's choices. It works really well. Give Daily 5a try next year. Your kids will probably love it.

I've been using Daily 5 for 3 years now and love it. Like many others I tweak it to work for me. The best thing about it is that you aren't setting up new stations each week. I had to change my listen to reading station every two weeks (but I had 6 books at a time available) and I changed the words at work with words each week but the activities stayed the same (I did change some activities each quarter to spice it up). The most crucial steps are introducing materials, modeling expectations, and building stamina. After that it pretty much runs itself all year=)
I tweaked some Daily 5 charts to use at the beginning of the year (originally found at www.jmeacham.com). You can dowload them from my blog:

You can do the same thing with Andrew Jackson, here's a low-quality photo taken with my cell phone - make the folds and then tilt the bill away from you, and then towards you. Deals
Such an interesting blog about how children can start to learn about money. If you want to keep your money safe and look for the best brokers, I suggest you visit this site.
It is crazy when you think this is how most of us would have started to learn about money but it is only when you are older that you will use it more. There is some good info on Elite Forex Trading
