Blending Practice Your Students Will LOVE

I've been working with one of my students who is still struggling to blend simple CVC words.  I honestly found that he LOVES my little word slider game that I made years ago.  He begged to play it and it's really helped him slide those words together to blend CVC words.
The teacher pulls out one letter at a time from the slider.  The student says the name of the sound and the teacher moves on to the next letter.  To make it a little easier, I have them blend the first two sounds together and then add the last sound on. The student says the word at the end. They can check to see if they got the word right by looking at the picture at the end! They LOVE it and it's so simple (the slider is made from a letter-sized envelope).

Just added- Vowel Team Word Sliders!

Or you can buy them in a bundled pack for a discount! :)

Natalie has a Holidays Around the World pack for upper graders too! It is a fun Webquest that can integrate technology and ELA into your holiday celebrations.

This 'Holidays Around the World' pack is the perfect way to mix technology integrated lessons, online research, and the fun holiday season! Your students will love using your computers or iPads to learn more about how different countries celebrate holidays in different parts of the world.

A webquest is a fun way for students to conduct online research projects. Students will use inquiry-based learning to complete the six steps of a webquest: introduction, task, process, resources, evaluation, and conclusion.

Want your students to write a letter to Santa this year? Turn it into a persuasive Christmas essay! This Dear Santa writing project is aligned to the Common Core State Standards! In our state (Utah!), all 5th graders take a persuasive writing assessment at the end of the year. Holidays Around the World Plans 2017

I'm excited for Holidays Around the World this year because 3 countries that we are learning about have their actual winter holiday fall on the date we are learning about it! *indicates those countries on my plans for this year.

I know you're spending your own money on this and I want you to make the most informed decision. Because of the updates I've made the past year, I feel like this product has everything we need to teach Holidays Around the World and not get sick of it each year (there are SO many options, guys!).  Want to know more? I've made this video to describe pretty much everything in the pack so you can see exactly what's included.

Something I wanted to add in my unit was a complete EXPERIENCE that the students get! Play the sound of an airplane taking off, dress like a flight attendant, pass out the in-flight snack, and fasten your seat-belts!  The WORLD AIRLINES will take off in 3, 2, 1.

Remember, in my pack, there is such a variety that each year you can change it up! You don't have to do all of the countries each year. The wonderful part about being the boss of applesauce is that you decided. With my new update of my pack this year, I've included more writing components and supplementals. It's JAM PACKED! Each country also has a reading passage to go with it so you can stop googling each country right before you "teach" it to your students (I'm talking to you Carly, hahah).  I've also included links to websites and books.... so I have pretty much done all the work for you. You're welcome. Kidding!!! ;) Kind of.

Ok, ready to take a look? The best deal is the BUNDLED pack (which includes 13 countries).

Wonder (Freebie)

You've read it, right? The fabulous book by R.J. Palacio called Wonder? I cried and cried when I read it. I wanted to read it to my class, but I decided that it wasn't a good fit for my students at the time (it's recommended for 3rd grade and up). And then I found We're All Wonders (basically the picture book version of Auggie's story) and immediately read it to my 1st grade students! We had a wonderful discussion about how we treat others who are different from us.

I wanted them to make a text-to-self connection so I did a writing extension. Then I made a cover. Then I made a bulletin board. DOES THE WORK EVER STOP! HA! The writing can go with either book.

I wanted to spread a little kindness to you. You can snag this for free in my store! Leave me a little love in the feedback.

Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures - Smile for Picture Day!

This post is sponsored by Colgate. Opinions are my own.

What the Teacher Wants is happy and excited to partner with Colgate and the Kids in Need Foundation for the Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures Smile For Picture Day Pledge! We've taken the pledge and hope you will join us in bringing education and smiles to children in need!

We invite you to:

A bright smile reflects a child’s developing self-esteem and the promise of a healthy, successful school year. Now through November 17th, pledge to promote bright smiles — for picture day and every day — for the chance to win 500 sets of toothbrushes and toothpaste for an elementary school in your community.

Here's what we need you to do:

2. Agree to spread the word by teaching your students the importance of oral health by teaching these 4 healthy habits:

* Brush with fluoride toothpaste 2X a day, especially after breakfast and before bedtime.
* Limit sweet, sticky snacks to avoid plaque attacks.
* Visit a dental professional regularly.
* Once teeth are touching, floss your child’s teeth once a day to remove plaque.

3. Take the pledge from now through November 17th and enter to win 500 sets of Colgate Kids toothpaste and toothbrushes for your school! You can also check out the website for more details.

{Enter here: Colgate Picture Day}

4. Join us on social media!

Share a picture day photo on social media using the hashtags #BrightSmilesBrightFutures #promo from now through November 17th and $1 will donated to the Kids in Need Foundation to help provide essential school supplies, including toothpaste and toothbrushes to those who need it most. You can also follow @ColgateBSBF on Twitter for the latest program updates!

Here's my lovely school photo example. Haha!

Of course I have 10 of these 8X10 pictures from my school picture day!
If you want one signed, let me know! ;)

Or maybe I should use this photo from 1st grade?

Thank you to Colgate for letting us be involved in the campaign to help bring brighter smiles to children in need!
