2 DIY Projects: Pop of Color and Mason Jar Storage

Michael's Craft Store contacted me a little while ago about participating in their back to school Create2Educate Sweepstakes program! I was thrilled to have the chance to be involved!

The projects that I planned were all centered around the the idea of cute and functional storage!

Projects 1 & 2

Step 1:  I found these two storage pieces made by Recollections -  I got the Desktop Marker Organizer and the Desktop Carousel. Both came plain white and the Marker Organizer was in a box which did required some assembly.
(Luckily, I delegated that part to my husband.)

Step 2: I used colorful scrapbook paper to match my rainbow themed classroom. Before I could Modge Podge the paper on, I had to remove all the hardware, sand down the rough edges, and then measure and cut each piece of paper how I wanted it.

Step 3: After waiting for the Modge Podge to dry, I sanded down the edges of the paper so they fit on just right, then applied one more layer of Modge Podge.

Step 4: The last step was putting all the hardware back on. Which, of course, my sweet husband did for me!

Here are what the two finished projects look like:
I love the color combos!  They are so cute and fun and will look great in my classroom. I love that they will help me stay organized and will give me more space for all my little teaching supplies!

Project 2

This project was also another way to bring in some cute, colorful and functional storage into my classroom.

Step 1: Buy 4 extra large sized mason jars, buy the chalkboard stickers, buy a chalkboard marker, buy black spray paint to paint the lids of the mason jars, and buy some cute and colorful ribbon.

Step 2: I used the black spray paint to paint the tops of the mason jars so they'd match with the chalkboard labels. Then I easily attached the sticker chalkboard labels, and used the chalkboard marker to label each jar.

Step 3: I filled each jar up with some of the school supplies I use the most and tied a colorful piece of ribbon around each one.

What I love most about this project is that it's not only organizing my school supplies, but it's also going to provide some cute classroom decor for my countertops!

What do you think?

I love both of your crafts. The mason jars will look so cute in a classroom. I think I might have to make those!

Love, love, love the jars. So little work for such an attractive storage container. Just yesterday I was trying to figure out how to organize my craft supplies so I wouldn't have to rummage through the cardboard box in which they currently reside. This will be a great beginning step. Now to figure out what to do with the craft papers, you know, tissue, construction, etc. . Any ideas? Thanks.

Yes, I too, like the jars. What is a chalkboard marker exactly? Does it rub off after you write with it, does it look like chalk when it writes, or is it simply a white marker that shows up on black... any of the three would be useful. Thanks for sharing. Kathleen

Robin and Margaret, file your construction paper. It'll also work with tissue paper if you fold it over a file folder (or stiff cardboard). Then place in a hanging file.

I like the jars but... wonder about the practicality of glass in the glassroom for storage because I did not see that the jars were plastic. Please advise.

I am using the mason jar storage in my room this year. Cute!!!!

The labels on the jar are pretty cute. I used jars last year and I will say to be prepared for breakage, especially if you don't have any rugs down.

Big glass jars in an elementary classroom?! Definitely something I would have to modify, not a safe choice!

What a great idea! I love your post and I love chalkboard labels. My newest fascination is organizing whole house with them. I just post on my blog article “Tame the mess with chalkboard labels. Part 1 - toddler room” and I made your idea part of it. Please check it out - hope you will like it :)

What size are the jars?

Love the jar her idea. But my school will never allow glass. Do you know if if Michael's sells clear plastic jars such as these?

At the dollar tree they have plastic drinking mason jars. Which would work just as great. They're already colored so all you really need is the label. Lol. This is a cute idea and I'm doing it for my daughters craft stuff!
