A Game for Missing Number {Subtraction}

With the Common Core Standards, our students must be able to subtract with unknowns in different places.  Here's a CHEEZY video of my niece and I playing this game with a missing subtrahend.

If you were so annoyed with my voice that you skipped over the video (hahaha):
For this game, you need googley eyes and this printable! That's all! :)  Player 1 puts out as many eyes as they want.  Player 2 counts them, writes that number in the first box,  and then covers their eyes. Player 1 hides some of the eyes behind their back.  Player 2 writes how many eyes are left in the last square and has to figure out how many were taken away. That number goes in the circle.

Adding Ten

Can you believe this isn't a Christmas post?  We are *actually* doing "regular" math around here {even though I'd much rather be sorting green and red M&M's}.

We've been practicing counting by tens, place value, and adding only one ten to a decade number.
For this partner game, I have my kiddos use plastic plates and dry-erase markers.  One partner puts an amount of tens cubes in the left spot and only one in the right side.  The other partner writes the number sentence.

And then we did this quick assessment:

What I love most about this is that it can be adapted to so many things... addition, missing partners, subtraction, place value, and so much more! Thank you to my old teammate, Jessica for the great idea {Miss you, Jess}!
Have a great week!  We are still in school until the 21st. :)

Subtraction Bowling

We've been really working on our subtraction skills!
Here's a *quick* and super fun activity to do with your kiddos.

Subtraction Bowling!

Supplies:
Dixie Cups
Tennis or bouncy ball
Recording Sheet

1.  Have your students set up 10 Dixie Cups against a wall {5 cups, then 4, then 3, then 2, and then 1}.
2. The first player rolls the ball toward the Dixi Cups.
3. The first player counts how many pins were knocked over and records that number on their recording sheet.
4. Using one of the strategies we've practiced {counting back, number line, draw a picture}, they find out how many pins were not knocked down {It's their partner's job to make sure they don't *cheat* and just count the pins not knocked over and actually subtract}.
5. The student can check their answer by counting how many pins were not knocked down.
6. Now it's player two's turn! Keep taking turns until each player has had 10 turns.
