February is FUN! {Valentine's, President's, and 100's Day}

February is busy, busy, busy!

First off, Valentine's Day!

1st grader: Why do we have Valentine's Day?

Me: Um.... to show we love each other.

1st grader: Ok! Cool!

Me: *walks to computer to Google it*
And that's how this mini-unit was born! Without getting too religious, I teach my students about the Legend of St. Valentine and they love it! It's a fun, interactive mini-unit that can take a week or one day! It's whatever you want it to be. I made it a few years ago but updated it today!

If you like the format of my Martin Luther King mini-unit, you will enjoy this one! This mini-unit is a great way to teach your students why we celebrate Valentine's Day (without being too religious).

One of my favorite days of the year! The 100th day of school! I don't know what teacher thought "You know what would be fun? If we made the 100th day of school a big deal?" Well whoever you are, teacher out there, I SALUTE YOU! I love 100's day!

This 100's Day Book is perfect for your 100's day!

Need something simple, fun, and engaging for your K-2 kiddos on 100's day? With just a click, print  and a staple in the left corner?! You've got it here in this 100's Day Book

It's simple enough students can work on it on their own, but also tied to the curriculum (reading, writing, and math). You can work on one or two pages each day, not even make it into a book (use the pages individually) or you can use the whole book on the 100th day! It's up to you!
The book can be up to 19 pages (including the cover).

I've differentiated many of the pages as well. There is a kinder version, 1st grade version and 2nd grade version!

Presidential FUN!

Alright, y'all. Who ya voting for? JUST KIDDING!  I would never ask that question and I don't necessarily plan to go too in depth about "the" election in my class. I'll probably introduce both candidates to my class with a picture, read a book about each of them, and talk about the election process. Romney does not have any books at my library, but I did find a few kids' websites that tell all about him:

So, I have had a lot of requests for a Mitt Romney poster to go along with my presidents graphic organizers.  If you ask...you shall receive.  So, you can snag these for free!  If you'd like a President Obama as well... you'll have to snag that in my President's and US Symbols packet.

Download Governor Romney's posters {here}!

You can grab these in my President's Day and US Symbols Unit. Perfect for November or in February for President's Day!

Oh and someone asked in the comments why I just wouldn't use a real picture of the candidates for the posters.  My answer is... I can't because I don't have the right to post pictures that are copyrighted. I personally don't own any pictures of either of the candidates and I cannot just take an image off the internet and post it on my product on my blog. :)  Just an FYI.

My New Friend & President's Day & U.S. Symbols

I apologize for my absence. I haven't been able to post my freebies that I've been doing in my classroom because, well, I'M OFF TRACK! :) So, I've been in my jammies a lot lately and just like my friend Kristin would say; my pjs and I are BFFs. :)

I have to introduce you to my new friend! Her name is Nikki and she is an amazing artist! She draws clipart and it's SUPER cute {and commercial use friendly}.  And what do you know? We apparently live thisclose to each other.  What a small world.

I mean look how cute?!?!?!?!

And she's so sweet because she takes requests!  I requested some President's Day clipart and *BOOM*, there it was! :)  She is also getting her Etsy shop up and ready to go, so check it all out!
Back to the President's Day clipart that I requested....I needed it for a unit I was making for my class and I just put it on TpT too!  Check it out {here} in it's full capacity because it's jam packed!

President's Day Research and Writing

Sorry that this idea is SOOOO last minute! I literally put this whole lesson together on my prep today. I had the idea in my head for the past week, but couldn't ever find the time to put it together. If you still need a way to honor our presidents, you can still do this activity next week.

In this upper grade President's Day activity, students research 3 different presidents (I wanted to make sure everyone didn't choose Washington and Lincoln), decide who they think is the most influential, then type an essay about the president they chose.

Links to websites about presidents: whitehouse.gov, Social Studies for Kids, Miller Center

I gave my students an hour and 10 minutes for this activity. (If I had more time, I would have separated the assignment into two days: day one - research, day two - writing.) What I liked best about this activity is that it wasn't about the final product, it was more about the learning my students did along the way.

P.S. Someone asked about good ideas for Black History Month... Here is the same template switched so that students are researching famous black Americans.
