Holiday Book Exchange

This year I am doing a Holiday Book Exchange.  Each child can bring in a book wrapped in lovely Christmas wrapping paper.  I haven't decided how we will actually do the exchange once the students bring their books in, but I'm really excited. I want to get my students even MORE excited about BOOKS and READING!  And let me tell you...they already love books and this will add more love into their hearts!  I made this letter to tell the parents about it. Once we exchange the books, of course we will read them together! The students can find books at:
  • Local bookstore (Borders or Barnes and Noble)
  • Local Thrift Stores (DI, Savers, Salvation Army)
  • Gently used book from home
  • And of COURSE our Scholastic Book Club. I just so happen to attach 3 catalogs with my book exchange note :)
Here is a download of the note!

If you have any ideas on how to actually exchange the books when we get them all...Please leave a comment!  Happy Reading!

What a nice idea.

To exhange the books you can have students draw a name from a bowl, hat, anything really. Then they give their book to the students name they pull.

Or you can put all the books in a pile and you pull names. The studets name you pulled gets to pick a book from the pile.

Rachelle - We usually do a candy bar exchange. It would work the same way... Everyone gets a wrapped book/candy bar, then read the following story. They pass the book right and left when the story tells them to. Whatever they end up with is what they get to unwrap.

Mr. WRIGHT was to take Mrs. WRIGHT RIGHT to the store to do some of her holiday shopping. As he LEFT in the car, he turned RIGHT out of the driveway. He had to go RIGHT back as he LEFT without Mrs. WRIGHT. They both got in the car on the LEFT side as the RIGHT side door would not open. Mr. and Mrs. WRIGHT again LEFT for the store, turning RIGHT out of the driveway. An argument occurred about the RIGHT turn as Mrs. WRIGHT said that Mr. WRIGHT should have turned LEFT. Mr. WRIGHT kept insisting that he was RIGHT, but Mrs. WRIGHT kept insisting that the nicer department store was on the LEFT. Two blocks away after another LEFT turn they discovered they had LEFT the credit cards at home. So, they made a LEFT turn, then a RIGHT to go back home to where they had LEFT the credit cards. As they turned RIGHT on to their street and LEFT into the driveway, Mrs. WRIGHT said "Let's just stay RIGHT here and shop for the RIGHT gifts over the internet". They went LEFT into the kitchen to make the RIGHT cup of eggnog. Then they went RIGHT into the living room where Mrs. WRIGHT turned to her LEFT and said to Mr. WRIGHT, "I hope they have some good stuff LEFT."

It might be too hard for first graders. Maybe if you read it really slow and shortened it down it would work.

Oh, here's another version:

The Right Family Christmas Story - Christmas was almost here and Mother RIGHT was finishing the Christmas baking. Father RIGHT, Susie RIGHT, and Billy RIGHT returned from their last minute Christmas errands.

"There's not much LEFT to be done," said Father RIGHT as he came into the kitchen. "Did you leave the basket of food at Church?" asked Mother RIGHT? "I LEFT it RIGHT where you told me to," said Billy RIGHT." "I don't have any money LEFT."

The hall telephone rang, and Susie RIGHT LEFT to answer it. She rushed back and told the family, "Aunt Tillie RIGHT LEFT a package for us RIGHT on Grandma RIGHT's porch. I'll go over there RIGHT now and get it," she said as she LEFT in a rush. Father RIGHT LEFT the kitchen and brought in the Christmas Tree.

By the time Susie RIGHT returned, Mother RIGHT, Father RIGHT, and Billy RIGHT had begun trimming the tree. The entire RIGHT family sang carols as they finished the decorating. Then they LEFT all the presents arranged under the tree and went to bed, hoping they had selected the RIGHT gifts for their family.

Now I hope you have the RIGHT present for yourself, because that's all that's LEFT of our story, except to wish you a Merry Christmas, isn't that RIGHT?

Natalie - Do kids each bring a wrapped candy bar? Do you send home a note to parents like Rachelle's book note?

Natalie Kay said...

Yes, each kid brings their own wrapped candy. I always bring some extras though to make sure everyone has something.

My room moms have typed up the note and sent it home in the past. I can make one for you though! :)

For the past several years, I have done a holiday book exchange. The children each purchase a new book, write a special note inside the cover of the book and wrap the book. To exchange books, each child gets the book he/she brought and we sit in a circle.
I have a poem I read about a family and Santa Claus. Everytime the children hear the word Santa, they pass the book once to the right. I can scan in the poem if you are interested.

We have done a mug exchange/book exchange the last couple years. I co-teach 36 1st graders so we go for the easiest method. We send home a "Gift Exchange" letter and ask that their gift can be for a boy or a girl. As the items come in, we put #'s on the package. The same #'s go in a jar and we call children to come pick a number. Our rule has been- the only gift you can't have is the one you brought in. We are thankful for any gift we receive. As someone mentioned above we make sure we have something to exchange for everyone.
