Last Minute Christmas Craft {for home or school}

I was contacted by Spangler and they offered to give me a pack of Dum Dums and Candy Canes.  WHOA! They weren't kidding! Thank you so much Spangler! Look at what they sent me:

I decided to do a holiday craft with my kiddos that I found on their website {here}!

We cut a slit in the reindeer and stuck in the Dum Dum. Then, we taped down the candy canes to cardstock and glued on the reindeer head.  They turned out darling and my students oohhed and ahhhed over them!
You can download the pattern for free {here}!

Check out Spangler TODAY for some cute crafts and great pins on Pinterest!!!!!

After doing our craft, we learned about Caribou {reindeer}.  I posted these last year and I thought I'd show you them again. :)  Enjoy!!

Adding Ten

Can you believe this isn't a Christmas post?  We are *actually* doing "regular" math around here {even though I'd much rather be sorting green and red M&M's}.

We've been practicing counting by tens, place value, and adding only one ten to a decade number.
For this partner game, I have my kiddos use plastic plates and dry-erase markers.  One partner puts an amount of tens cubes in the left spot and only one in the right side.  The other partner writes the number sentence.

And then we did this quick assessment:

Clic {here} to download!

What I love most about this is that it can be adapted to so many things... addition, missing partners, subtraction, place value, and so much more! Thank you to my old teammate, Jessica for the great idea {Miss you, Jess}!
Have a great week!  We are still in school until the 21st. :)

Tech the Halls {What iWant for Christmas}

You might have seen {this} post by sweet Reagan.  She sent me her Techy Santa Pack and I told her we MUST do bulletin boards with the name "Tech the Halls". I love a good play on words! ;)

My kiddos loved the craft!  I think next year I will scale it down {maybe resize it on the copy machine} so I can fit more on my bulletin board.  Our head custodian is not loving the ones that are stapled on the sides. HA! The glasses are TOO cute and my kiddos tried to wear them around the classroom!

Go check out Reagan's packet!  And if you'd like the letters for your bulletin board,

Behind the Scenes of Holidays Around the World

Each year I do my Holidays Around the World, I like to give you a sneak peek of what it looks like in my classroom. This year I will complete ALL 13 countries (available in my bundle)! Did you know I just updated this pack last week? It's new and improved for sure (with lots added).

Something I wanted to add in my unit was a complete EXPERIENCE that the students get! Play the sound of an airplane taking off, dress like a flight attendant, pass out the in-flight snack, and fasten your seat-belts!  The WORLD AIRLINES will take off in 3, 2, 1.

I really wanted to talk about Netherlands on December 5th and Sweden on December 13th because those dates are important to their holiday. Many of the other holidays begin either before we start our unit of after...so the date that you introduce that country doesn't matter. I had to do a little rearranging to make it happen for those two countries, but it'll work! (This is the 2016 plans)

This lesson plan template is also available in my pack!

These informational reading passages are EVERYTHING! It's nice to have all of the key points right there on one sheet of paper. SHOUT OUT  to my friend Carly who helped me!

Remember, in my pack, there is such a variety that each year you can change it up! You don't have to do all of the countries each year. The wonderful part about being the boss of applesauce is that you decided. With my new update of my pack this year, I've included more writing components and supplementals. It's JAM PACKED! Each country also has a reading passage to go with it so you can stop googling each country right before you "teach" it to your students (I'm talking to you Carly, hahah).  I've also included links to websites and books.... so I have pretty much done all the work for you. You're welcome. Kidding!!! ;) Kind of.

Here's a picture of just some of the extensions included:

Ok, ready to take a look? The best deal is the BUNDLED pack (which includes 13 countries). Or you can break it up and buy JUST Part 1 or JUST Part 2

{Editable} Sub Plan Template Freebie

I've had the idea to share my sub plan template for quite a while, but for some reason I always felt a little silly about it. It's really not the most special thing I've ever made, but at the same time, I think some of you might like it.

Here's the product description:

Your sub plans tell a lot about you as a teacher. Here is a simple template that will help you write nice and organized sub plans. It is editable, so you can fill in all the necessary info yourself including special notes to the sub, your daily schedule, and lesson instructions. It also encourages your sub to write comments about your class and rate their behavior. Jazz it up adding your own cute fonts and/or clip art.

My favorite thing about this format, is that it asks your sub to rate your class on a scale of 1-5. (1 = the worst class you’ve ever seen, 3 = average, and 5 = the best class you’ve ever seen.) I love that this encourages my class to be on their best behavior. I have set it up so that if my students get a score of 4 or 5 they get some sort of reward (I use class points towards a mystery motivator reward), and if they get a score of 1 or 2, they have some sort of negative consequence.)

This is a FREE download, so head on over to my TPT store to grab your free copy!

Think you can use this Sub Plan Template?
Do  you have any secrets you use to help your students behave for your sub?

Reindeer Job Application

A few years ago I got this cute Rudolph idea. I got it from LoveTwoTeach. Even though her idea was made for 1st graders, my 5th graders LOVED it! I adapted the job application to make it more appropriate for 5th graders.

Here are how some of my reindeer turned out:
 I made one too! Hehe!

Some of kids wrote the funniest things on their application. Here are some of my favorites...

Qualifications: What talents and skills do you have that would help you be a good employee?
  • My skills are either playing video games or being lazy.
  • I have a unique scence of fastion.
  • I am good at resisting boredom
  • I found some pixie dust the other day so I can fly really good.
  • I believe in Santa and I have a shiny red nose.
  • I'm kind of a night person.
  • I love carrots and apples.
  • I'm actually kind of immortal.
  • I'm a fast thinker, I could get you out of some situations.
  • I love milk and cookies so I could help santa out.
  • I have very good math skills and can do multiplication, so that might come in handy.
  • I'm good at dodgeball.
Why do you want to work for Santa?
  • I want to know who he is and if he's real.
  • Well... to be honest, I want free toys.
  • I love Santa. Probably my favorite thing about him is he's sososo sneaky.
  • Well I believe in everything - Santa, Heavenly Father, tooth fairy (kind of.)
  • I'd also like to get to play with magic everyday.
  • I don't want Christmas to be cancelled.
  • I'm never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever busy on Christmas Eve.
Why would you make a good reindeer?
  • I've watched all the reindeer movies.
  • I hate brussel sprouts.
  • I will not whine, cry, be mean, or eat chocolate bars before or while flying.
  • I do not show off and I'm not bossy.
  • I would help Santa, like if he needed me to move a couch I would move the couch.
  • I'm kind of sneaky and I can keep a secret.
  • I've never been on the bad list or gotten any coal.
  • I think I'd be a good reindeer because I can read signs (that are in English).
Once we made our reindeer and filled out our job applications, I got out my student laptops (yes, I have a half classroom set - I'm an eMINTS teacher...) and my students started making an audition video to send to Santa. I am teaching them how to use iMovie to film and edit a video of themselves. If I have enough time, I might even turn this into a persuasive essay project and have my students write a 5 paragraph essay on why Santa should hire them.

Thanks for the great idea, LoveTwoTeach!
