Ok, I gave in and actually did a DIY project and I really committed to it. Kind of. What did I get myself into?
Here's my updated crate seats (I changed out the fabric):
Here's my updated crate seats (I changed out the fabric):
Everyone has been pinning on Pinterest {I first saw it *here*} like CRAZY this wonderful storage seating idea with crates. Well...I jumped into it and thought I'd do it! P.S. They are pretty low to the ground {for 1st graders} when you put them at your guided reading table. I just lowered my table a little bit and I think it'll work just fine!
The finished product! |
Before you freak out when you see how much I spent, please be aware that I wanted to just get this project finished. I didn't take my time to price it out or seek donations. I'm pretty sure Wal-Mart and Home Depot would have donated most of the items used {if I would have been patient in getting those items}.
Remember I made 6 crate seats! You can start small!
Supplies and expected costs for 6 crates:
- Staple Gun {16.43- Home Depot}
- Staples 8mm {2.67- Home Depot}
- (2) 1/2 inch thick plywood about 2'X4' {22.52 for 2 - Home Depot}
- Cutting the wood to fit in the crate {Free- Home Depot}
- (6) Crates {20.82 for 6- Wal-Mart}
- Spray Glue {5.97- Wal-Mart}
- (2) Foam Roll 1 inch thick {32.00- Wal-Mart...*ouch*, instead of buying this foam I bought, just buy the egg shell foam mats!}
- Ribbon {1.97- Wal-mart}
- Fabric {3.5 yards at $15.94-Wal-Mart}
- A husband willing to help you out {PRICELESS!}
Here is my tutorial!
After having the Home Depot worker cut my pieces my hubby had to take them home and sand the corners down to round them out. |
Cut the foam to fit on the wood. |
Use spray adhesive on the wood focusing on the edges. Pat down the fabric to ensure it sticks all around. Let dry for 2 hours. |
Cut the fabric |
It's best to have someone help you staple. I pulled the fabric tight and my husband used his muscles to staple. |
The corners look much like a present being wrapped. |
AFTER THIS STEP (It's not pictured because I just recently did this... buy vinyl table cloths by the yard at a fabric store (I got mine at walmart) and cover on top of your fabric with clear vinyl! Then you don't have to switch out your fabric. It just wipes right off!
Fit your ribbon {for the handle} and place in the middle. |
Pull the ribbon tight (but not too tight) and start stapling! |
You can use the ribbon as a handle to pull the seat out so you can store items in your crate. |
The finished product! |
My kiddos LOVE the crate seats during guided reading!

Great tips from our readers:
*Instead of buying the foam from the craft department, but the egg shell foam pads in the bed/bath department- It will be much cheaper!
*Try your local grocery store to get donated crates {eggs/milk are delivered in them!}

OMG!!! I love this! I pinned it from a couple of different sources on Pinterest, but had no idea how to do it. Your tutorial is fantastic...a lifesaver! Thank you, thank you, thank you! As soon as my daughter's wedding is over, I intend to make 6 of these for my guided reading table
Too cute!!! I LOVE THIS PROJECT!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for posting this! I do the same thing on pinterest! I was just telling my hubby that I need to make a realistic list for myself to do! I am going to make these crate seats!

Wow. They look great! I'm just not sure that I could do that. I don't think I have the patience for a project like that. KUDOS! :) Maybe at some point in time, I will attempt to follow your tutorial. Thanks for sharing!

This is awesome - I just showed my husband and he said he'd help me. When our class sizes grew to 32, "extra" chairs were hard to come by. These would be PERFECT! I've got to get busy! :)

Nicely DONE! I have been wanting to make these for a while. Thank you!

They are awesome! Do you know I threw about 5-6 crates out of my classroom about 3 years ago. I wish I would have known about this project then.
I made these for my classroom last summer and love them! The students really like sitting on them, and I love the storage!
Hints: My husband cut the corners with a saw. We didn't sand them. Instead of the roll of foam, I bought one of the foam things for mattresses ($10 at Walmart). It wasn't smooth like the roll but that didn't matter once they were put together.
It was a family project at our house. My daughter had a great time helping with these and is making 3 of them to take to college with her this fall!
you need to link up to my Linky partay you did a great job!!!

I was just discussing making these with my mom last night! I love them!
Looks great! My daddy is in the process of making me some and he's bringing them this weekend...I can't wait to see them!
I jumped the gun on your TBA post before reading this, so disregard my "how did you do it" question. I will be doing this (well, hubby will be doing this). Thanks again!

If you have a Waffle House (or probably any grocery store) near you, they would probably donate the crates (in near perfect condition!!!!) to you! They get their eggs/milk delivered in them and have TONS!!!!
They turned out SUPER cute!! I have this on my "to-do" list. I wondered how they measured against my guided reading table. I keep looking at my crates and thinking they look low, but with the foam maybe it boosts them up. I think it would be so fun to have them in different areas of the room and each one having a theme. Like Magic Tree house in this one and informational texts in that one. Trying to figure out how to build stamina with those reading on their own! Hmmm....
Love the tutorial!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I too fell in love with the concept on Pinterest, and I have been making things I find on Pinterest like crazy for weeks, but that project was intimidating me. I think now I will give it a try....
Great job! It looks amazing! You've inspired me to try this...can't wait!!

You are too awesome!! I LOVE these!! They are adorable!! My hubby or dad could sooo do that! I think I will go shopping and then put them to work! What a great way to utilize the crate! I think you should be soooo proud of yourself. You are going to be ready to kick some butt the first time one of the little ones tries to twirl them around by the ribbon. hehe!

LOVE this! you did such a great job :)
I want these!! I love that it is something that I can make with a little help from my hubby and how great to have something a little different for the kids to sit on during guided reading. Come on over to Life's a Teach!! to enter my giveaway to help you recoup some of your cost!!!
Love the ribbon "handle"!

How adorable. I have a couple of extra milk crates. I think I am going to spray paint them and give it a try!! You are so creative!! My husband will love this!!

What a fantastic idea! Don't know if I'll get around to it this summer but will seriously think about it. So creative. You should be proud of your accomplishment! Thanks for sharing the steps in how to actually complete it.
These look so good you should totally be proud of yourself. I definitely have them on my to do list. Thanks for the instructions.
Cindy
Adorable! I love the idea of using them at your guided reading table.
You are awesome!! I love your new chair!! Very good work!
Nice job! It cost a little, but you have just "invested" in your classroom. These will last a long time and the cost will be distant memory in a year or two!
I hadn't seen this on Pinterest before, but what a great idea! I actually have a white crate just like yours that I currently keep my scrapbook paper in, but I'm planning on moving those soon and this is an *excellent* idea for how to use the crate! LOVE! I think I'll be pinning this now...

Love, love, love this!!! I need to get rid of these uncomfortable tiny chairs at my guided reading table and this would be perfect. Who doesn't like more storage?! Thanks for the tutorial!
I pinned this on Pinterest too. I was planning on making these but I didn't know they would be so much work!
Great job!! I have been seeing it a lot on pinterest.

I am addicted to Pinterest. Isn't it fun?!

WOW! Those are super cute. I am not sure, however, that I would have the patience!!! Maybe if I beg and plead my husband will become that priceless helper :)
Thanks!

I totally just made 6 of these today! I absolutely LOVE them... so fun and practical. It take a bit of money and effort- but they are going to be so worth it! :)
What an excellent idea! The ribbon down the middle really sets it off nicely.
This is a project I've pinned too! I have my crates ready. Now I need to find the perfect fabric!

I love these! I think I am going to talk my husband into helping make these before school starts! Love them! Great job!

I really want to make these! Well, I really want to HAVE these - the making part not so much. Maybe I'll recruit a parent next year!
The Lowes near me just donated about $300 worth of items to my classroom so it never hurts to ask!

This is Absolutely the MOST amazing thing I have EVER seen!!!! Seating and storage all in one?!? Fabulous!!! Thanks for sharing! I'm going to Wal-mart tomorrow!;)

I'm feeling inspired now! :) I was thinking I might use looped ribbon to make a couple pull tabs in lieu of the ribbon that goes all the way across. Also, I just noticed that Staples has crates for $3 this week.
Love your crates! You mention at the start of the post that you feel Walmart would have donated. I'm surprised to hear that Walmart and Home Depot donate these types of materials. I'd love to hear who you speak to and any tips you can share for successfully requesting donations.
I have these crates in my classroom right now as my book storage. My kids only go to the classroom library once a week to fill their book baskets, so the rest of the time they could be covered with these cushions. I'm so excited to do this! Thanks so much for the directions!
I just recovered my kitchen chairs and spayed them with scotch guard to protect them from my kids. The bottle cost me 5 bucks but I bet if you sprayed these it would make them last longer. I know how gross things in my classroom get. :)
This is really great - like a comment made above, I had pinned this from another site and went crazy trying to figure out the directions. THANK YOU so much for the step by step, but also the visuals (pictures) - you must be a great teacher!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! I love your cute stripes! I just had to go out and make them, but I think you can skip the adhesive. It will cut down on the cost and time and isn't really necessary!
I would also motivate just about every person to save this web page for any favorite assistance to assist posted the appearance http://www.seattlepi.com/business/press-releases/article/Who-Makes-The-Best-Memory-Foam-Mattress-Mattress-4303859.php
I wonder if I could get grocery store plastic crates, a piece of egg crate foam, and just staple that puppy on the flat side of the carton with fabric over top. What do you think? I know it's cutting corners, but REALLY....I'm all about cutting corners!
Could you not just make or have the pillow covers made with Velcro closure at one end, put the foam inside, fit a board in the crate, and put the cushion on top of the board?
I will be/ have worked with first grade boys. I think I need something that can be cleaned.
