Writing - I Love America

As an introduction to American history, I had my students reflect on the reasons they love our country. In this lesson, I quickly shared my thoughts and explained many of the reasons that I love America. Then I played a patriotic video slide show to the song, I Love America (it's part of a program we have called Hope of America, but any patriotic slide show from youtube would work). It really got my students thinking about all the great things America has to offer. While my students were writing I played the national anthem and other patriotic songs to help put them as they wrote. It turned out to be a great lesson and a fun way to introduce my social studies curriculum.

This lesson would be a great way to incorporate opinion writing
{a huge part of the new Common Core State Standards}.

I thought some of you may be able to use this as September 11th and Veteran's Day are approaching.

And please don't worry, I made an upper grades version:
And a younger grades version:

I've even included a black and white and color master of each!! (I don't know about you, but I've been spending WAY too much money on colored ink lately...)

ENJOY!
